About Doom (decensored)
Doom for the Game Boy Advance came out in 2001, developed by id Software and published by Activision. It was a notable attempt to bring a PC first person shooter to a handheld, a time when most portable games were simpler arcade or puzzle titles. The hardware limitations were obvious, but it was a functional port of a game many people already knew.
You control a space marine fighting through a Martian base overrun by demons. Your goal is to survive each level, find the exit, and kill everything in your path. The game uses a simplified version of the original's first person shooting; you move through maze like corridors, find colored keycards to open doors, and collect weapons like the shotgun and chainsaw. The action is fast and the screen can get crowded with enemies, making it surprisingly challenging for a handheld. It feels immediate and aggressive, a direct translation of the PC experience into your hands.
