Deadly Skies came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, published by Konami. It was part of that late era for the handheld, a time when developers were really pushing what the little system could do visually. You pilot a lone fighter jet, moving automatically from left to right across the screen. Your main goal is simply to survive each stage, blasting through waves of enemy aircraft, tanks, and turrets that fill the screen with bullets. The game uses a power up system; you collect icons to upgrade your main weapon, switching between different shot types like spread or laser. There is also a screen clearing smart bomb you can deploy in a pinch, which becomes essential during the more chaotic boss fights. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding sharp reflexes and smart bomb management. It feels like a constant, tense dance between firing and dodging.
