About Daiku No Gensan (english Translation)
Daiku no Gensan came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, developed by Irem. It was part of that wave of late 90s portable games that tried to pack a full console style adventure into your hands. You don't hear about it much now, but it had a certain charm that stood out on the system.
You control a carpenter named Gensan, who fights with his trusty hammer instead of a sword. Your main goal is to rescue a kidnapped princess by working your way through a series of themed worlds, each a collection of single screen rooms. The core loop involves exploring these areas, smashing blocks and enemies with your hammer, and collecting special golden logs. These logs are the key; you need a certain number to unlock the boss door at the end of each world. The pacing is deliberate, more about careful platforming and figuring out how to reach certain items than fast paced action. It feels like a methodical, slightly quirky puzzle platformer where your primary tool is a hammer, and that alone makes the experience distinct.
