About Creatures (e)(paradox)
I picked up Creatures for the Game Boy Advance back when it first released; it was one of those early titles that helped define what the handheld could do. Developed by The Code Monkeys and published by Midas Interactive Entertainment, it felt like a natural part of the GBA's growing library, a puzzle platformer that stood alongside other thoughtful games of its time.
You control a small, round creature named Clyde, guiding him through a series of interconnected, screen by screen rooms. The main goal is to rescue your fellow creatures who are trapped in cages, which requires careful navigation and timing. Your primary tool is a simple jump, but the signature mechanics involve picking up and throwing blocks to create pathways, as well as avoiding or outsmarting various enemy types. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical; you cannot rush through, and the difficulty comes from figuring out the specific sequence of actions needed in each compact space. It feels like solving a quiet, physical puzzle with your hands.
