I picked up Crash Bandicoot XS for my Game Boy Advance back in 2002. It was developed by Vicarious Visions, a studio that handled a lot of the handheld Crash titles. This was during that era where you hoped a 3D console character would translate well to the small screen, and this was one of the attempts to capture that platforming feel on the go.

You control Crash, running and jumping through a series of linear, screen by screen levels. The main goal is simply to get from the start to the finish, navigating past obstacles and enemies. Your primary actions are spinning to defeat foes and breaking open crates, of which there are many, to collect the signature Wumpa Fruit. The level design often funnels you forward, but it also hides paths and boxes in tricky spots, encouraging some backtracking and exploration to find everything. The pacing is generally quick, though the difficulty can spike unexpectedly with some precise platforming sequences. It feels like a condensed, portable version of the console gameplay, where your thumbs are constantly busy with jumps and spins.
