I first played Conker's Pocket Tales on my Game Boy Color back in 1999. It was developed by Rare, the same company that made a lot of the big Nintendo games at the time. This was during the peak of the handheld, when every new cartridge felt like a small world to explore. The game stood out because it wasn't another port; it was an original adventure built for the small screen.

You control Conker, a young red squirrel, on a quest to recover a bunch of stolen presents for his girlfriend. The gameplay involves moving screen by screen through different environments like forests and caves. You jump across platforms, fight enemies with a simple sword swipe, and spend a lot of time collecting items. A major part of the game is finding keys to unlock new areas and gathering the many scattered Fairy Queen Medallions to progress. The pacing is generally relaxed, though some of the later platforming can get tricky. It feels like a straightforward, charming quest that fits perfectly in your pocket.
