About Commander Keen
Commander Keen came out for the Game Boy Color in 2001, developed by David A. Palmer Productions. It was a late release for the system, arriving when many players were already moving on to newer handhelds. This version was an adaptation of the original PC side scroller, bringing the character to a portable screen.
You control Billy Blaze, a kid who becomes the hero Commander Keen. Your goal is to explore levels, gather key items, and ultimately rescue your kidnapped parents. The game plays out screen by screen; you jump across platforms, shoot aliens with your ray gun, and solve simple environmental puzzles. You collect candy for points and extra lives, and you hunt for secret areas that often hide useful power ups. The pacing is brisk, but the controls can feel a bit slippery, making some jumps more difficult than they look. Navigating the levels and outsmarting the enemies gives the game a light, exploratory feel.
