Columns is that one puzzle game on the Sega Master System that tricked me into thinking it was just Tetris with gems at first. You’ve got these colorful jewels dropping down, and the goal is to line up three of the same color—vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Sounds simple, but the way they twist as they fall makes it weirdly satisfying when you pull off a sneaky diagonal match.

What I like is that it’s got this ancient Greek theme going on, with columns in the background and this oddly dramatic music that makes clearing rows feel way more epic than it should. The controls are straightforward, but the gems rotate in a way that takes a minute to get used to—I kept messing up my stacks early on because I’d flip them the wrong way. Once it clicks, though, it’s the kind of game you zone out to for way too long.

It’s not as flashy as modern puzzle games, but there’s something about the simplicity that just works. You’ll either love it or forget it exists after five minutes—no in-between.
