I picked up Columns Crown for the Game Boy Advance back in 2005, a Sega release that came along when the handheld was full of puzzle games trying to stand out. It was a time when you could find a new twist on falling blocks almost every month, and this one was Sega's attempt to refresh their own classic formula for a portable screen.

You control the descent of colored gem trios, rotating them to align three or more of the same color either horizontally or vertically to make them vanish. The main objective is to keep the playfield from filling up, which gets progressively harder as the gems fall faster. A couple of its key mechanics are the Crown system, where clearing gems under a crown piece can trigger large chain reactions, and the ability to store a column for later use, giving you a strategic backup plan. The pacing starts deceptively simple but demands quick planning as the speed increases, making for a solid challenge. It feels satisfying to set off a big combo that clears half the screen in one go.
