You start with a few heroes—samurai, mages, that sort of thing—and each has this flashy special ability you can trigger by tapping their portrait. But here’s the catch: once you use it, you’re stuck waiting for the cooldown, so timing is everything.

Green powers heal or buff your team, while red ones blast enemies—simple at first, but you’ll quickly realize you can’t just spam them. Lose a hero, and they’re benched for the rest of the run, which hurts when you’re three quests deep. Gold lets you upgrade your squad between battles, and suddenly those early "eh, whatever" choices start biting you when the difficulty spikes. It’s got that "one more try" energy when you lose by a sliver of health.
