About Chessmaster
Chessmaster arrived on the Game Boy Advance in 2002, published by Ubisoft. This was a period when the handheld was getting a wide variety of genres, from platformers to deep strategy titles. Having a serious chess game in your pocket felt like a significant step up from simpler electronic versions.
You control the chess pieces, of course, with the main objective being to checkmate your opponent's king. The game offers a few signature mechanics that set it apart. There is a comprehensive tutorial mode that breaks down everything from basic piece movement to complex strategic concepts. You can also play against the computer AI, which has adjustable difficulty levels to match your skill, from beginner to expert. The pacing is entirely your own; you can think through each move for as long as you need. It feels like having a patient, knowledgeable coach and a formidable opponent always ready for a game.
