About Cars (i)(independent)
I picked up Cars for the Game Boy Advance back in 2006, a title from developer LSP. It was one of many licensed games from that era, designed to tie in with the Pixar film. On the GBA, it felt like a distinct experience compared to the console versions, built for the handheld's specific capabilities.
You control Lightning McQueen and other characters from the film, racing through various tracks and engaging in a collection of minigames. The main goal is to progress through the story by winning races and completing these challenges. The gameplay splits between straightforward circuit racing and a series of quick, event based tasks; these can range from stunt driving to time trials. The racing itself is simple, focusing on tight turns and avoiding obstacles, while the minigames break up the pace with different objectives. It is not particularly difficult, making it accessible for younger players. Driving through the pixelated landscapes captures a lighthearted, arcade style feel.
