About Carl Lewis : Athletics 2000
I picked up Carl Lewis: Athletics 2000 for the Game Boy Color back when it came out. It was one of those sports titles from the handheld's library, published by Ubisoft, that tried to capture the energy of the Olympic Games. It fit right in with the era's portable offerings, a straightforward track and field game you could play on the go without much fuss.
You control Carl Lewis, or another athlete, through a series of Olympic events. The main goal is to win medals by competing in disciplines like the 100-meter dash, long jump, and javelin. The gameplay relies heavily on button-mashing for running events, building up speed by rapidly pressing the A button. For field events, timing becomes key; you need to press a button at the right moment during your approach to launch into a jump or throw. The pacing is quick, with each event lasting only a short time, but the difficulty can spike, especially when nailing the precise timing for a perfect long jump. It feels like a frantic test of your thumbs and reflexes more than a deep simulation.
