I first played Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars on the Game Boy Advance, a version that came out in 2000. It was developed by Revolution Software and published by BAM! Entertainment, arriving on a handheld better known for platformers and RPGs. This was a time when having a deep, story-driven adventure in your pocket felt like a novelty.
You control George Stobbart, an American tourist in Paris, who gets pulled into a conspiracy after a cafe bombing. The main goal is to unravel the mystery, which leads you across Europe hunting for Templar secrets. You explore locations screen by screen, collecting items and combining them in your inventory to solve environmental puzzles. Conversations with characters are crucial; you choose dialogue options to gather information. The pacing is deliberate, requiring careful observation and logical thinking, and some puzzles can be quite challenging. Moving George through these beautifully drawn scenes and slowly piecing the story together feels like actively participating in a clever detective novel.
