I picked up Boboboubo Boubobo: 9 Kyoku Senshi Gag Yuugou on the Game Boy Advance back in 2004, a time when the handheld was full of quirky Japanese titles that never left the country. Hudson Soft published it, and it was one of those games you had to import if you wanted to experience its particular brand of humor. You control Bobobo, a man with an incredible afro who fights using his nose hair. The main goal is to battle through various stages, defeating enemies in a mix of platforming and combat. Signature mechanics include using your nose hair as a whip to attack and grab items, along with quick-time event style button prompts that trigger special, over-the-top moves. The pacing is fast and chaotic, with a difficulty that can spike unexpectedly during boss encounters. It feels like playing through a slapstick cartoon where the rules are made up and the only constant is absurdity.
