Bleach Advance was a Japan only Game Boy Advance release from around 2005, developed by Dimps and published by Sega. It arrived when the handheld was well established, a time filled with many action games based on popular anime series. This one is a side scrolling platformer that follows the early story arcs of the Bleach manga, putting you in the shoes of Ichigo Kurosaki.

You control Ichigo through a series of linear stages, using his oversized Zanpakuto sword to slash through hollows and other spiritual enemies. The main goal is to fight your way to the end of each level, confronting a boss character at the conclusion. A key mechanic is the spirit card system; you collect and equip these cards to perform special attacks or grant stat boosts, adding a small layer of strategy to the straightforward combat. The game also features some light platforming and exploration, though the path is generally clear. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can feel uneven, with some bosses posing a significant challenge. Moving through the levels and landing a powerful special attack provides a simple, satisfying sense of impact.
