I picked up Blackthorne on the Game Boy Advance back in 2003, a Blizzard Entertainment title that came out when the handheld was full of ambitious ports. You control Kyle Blackthorne, a man with a shotgun and a vendetta, moving through gloomy, screen by screen environments. Your main goal is to navigate these hostile territories, fighting off monstrous guards and solving environmental puzzles to progress. The combat has a specific rhythm; you can duck behind cover to avoid enemy fire, then pop out to blast them with your shotgun, or use your bow for silent, long range takedowns. It's a methodical game, not a fast paced rush, where a wrong move means a quick death. Exploring the labyrinthine mines and fortresses, hunting for keys and new gear, gives the journey a deliberate, weighty feel. Moving through the oppressive atmosphere, one carefully planned shot at a time, creates a tense and satisfying experience.
