So The Black Onyx is this old-school Game Boy Color RPG from Japan—one of the first big hits in the genre over there. It’s got that classic dungeon-crawler vibe where you’re poking around dark corridors, fighting monsters, and praying you don’t run out of health. Speaking of health, this game might’ve been the first to use that color-changing health bar (blue to red) instead of just numbers, which is wild because now you see that everywhere.

It’s definitely rough around the edges by today’s standards, but there’s something charming about how straightforward it is. You pick a class, dive into dungeons, and figure things out as you go. No hand-holding, just you and whatever weird creatures lurk in the dark. If you’re into retro RPGs, it’s a neat little piece of history.
