About Biohazard Gaiden (japan)
Biohazard Gaiden, known as Resident Evil: Gaiden outside Japan, was a 2002 Game Boy Color release from Capcom. It arrived late in the handheld's life, offering a portable take on survival horror when such a thing was still a novelty. The game follows Barry Burton and Leon S. Kennedy as they investigate a biological outbreak aboard the ocean liner Starlight.
You control one character at a time, navigating the ship screen by screen from a top-down perspective. The main objective is to uncover the source of the infection and survive the mutated creatures roaming the halls. Combat uses a unique timing-based system; an on-screen meter appears when an enemy is near, and you must press the button as a moving indicator crosses a target zone to land a shot with your handgun or other weapons. You explore interconnected rooms, solve item-based puzzles, and manage limited resources like health and ammo. The pacing is deliberate, with tension coming from unpredictable enemy encounters and the challenge of conserving supplies. Playing it feels like a tense, condensed version of a larger horror adventure, where every decision carries weight.
