Beast Wars for the Game Boy Color came out in 1999, published by Hasbro Interactive. It was part of that wave of late 90s handheld games based on popular cartoons, a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate 3D action onto a small, two-color screen. You take control of either Optimus Primal or Cheetor, the Maximals, who are trying to stop the Predacons from altering history on a prehistoric Earth.

You guide your character through a series of interconnected, screen by screen areas, fighting Predacon drones with your character's specific weapon; Optimus uses a powerful sword, while Cheetor relies on a rapid fire energy bow. The main goal is to find and destroy the alien obelisks the Predacons are using, which involves a lot of exploration and backtracking through similar looking jungle and cave environments. The combat is straightforward but the level design can be confusing, and the game has a reputation for being quite difficult due to some unforgiving enemy placements. Playing it feels like a slow, methodical crawl through a hostile world where every new screen could mean another fight for survival.
