The game presents a scenario set in a future where humanity, facing an alien threat, tests prospective commanders by sending them through a timegate to four distinct historical periods.

Players assume the role of a commander tasked with proving their strategic acumen across these eras: a near-future 2025, World War II, the Roman Empire, and a prehistoric age. The core gameplay operates on two interconnected levels. On the strategic map, which uses a top-down perspective, players maneuver stacks of units across a hex-based grid in a turn-based system. Progression involves moving these stacks to control areas and engage enemy forces. When opposing stacks meet, the game transitions to a tactical combat mode. In this phase, the individual units within the stacks are deployed on a smaller, detailed map where they maneuver and fight to resolve the encounter. Successfully completing the strategic and tactical challenges across all four time periods is required to advance the narrative and ultimately confront the alien threat.
