About Backtrack (u)(mode7)
Backtrack was released for the Game Boy Advance in 2000. It was developed by Natsume, a company known for other GBA titles, and it fits right into that early era of the handheld where developers were experimenting with new kinds of action games. You play as special agent Jim Track, who is on a mission to rescue the humans taken to the evil Domingoaniax's base on the moon; he will need to survive Domingo's robot army to do it.
You guide Jim through a series of interconnected, screen by screen rooms, each filled with patrolling robots and environmental hazards. Your main objective is to find and rescue all the captive humans hidden throughout the base. The game's signature mechanics include using a limited supply of bombs to destroy certain walls and uncover secrets, and a rewind function that lets you reverse time by a few seconds if you make a mistake. The pacing is deliberate, as you carefully check each room for clues and avoid enemies you cannot directly fight. It feels like a tense, methodical puzzle where every move matters.
