Azure Dreams on the Game Boy Color is one of those weird little RPGs that sticks with you. You start off in Monsbaiya, this cozy desert town where everyone’s obsessed with climbing the Monster Tower—a dungeon that reshuffles itself every time you enter. At first, it’s just you and a knife, but pretty soon you’re recruiting monsters to fight alongside you. Some are useless, others become absolute beasts if you train them right.
Between dungeon runs, you’re fixing up the town, wooing villagers (if that’s your thing), and managing your monster stable. The pixel art’s got this warm, sunset-drenched vibe, and the music’s way catchier than it has any right to be. It’s grindy in that old-school way, but there’s something satisfying about slowly building up your team and seeing how deep you can push into the tower each time. Just don’t get too attached to your gear—dying means losing everything you brought in.
If you like dungeon crawlers with a side of town sim and monster collecting, this one’s a hidden gem. Just be ready to reset a lot when RNG screws you over.
