Azure Dreams came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, a Konami title that fit right in with the handheld's library of deep, sometimes quirky adventures. You control a young man named Koh, whose main goal is to climb a mysterious monster-infested tower that looms over his hometown. The core loop involves entering the tower, exploring it one screen at a time, and fighting monsters in turn-based combat. If you are defeated, you lose almost all your items and get sent back to the beginning, but you keep any monster eggs you've collected; these can hatch into familiars that fight alongside you on subsequent attempts. Between climbs, you use the money and materials you've salvaged to develop your town, which opens up new shops and services. The constant risk of losing progress makes each floor a careful calculation, and successfully hatching a powerful new monster after a failed run keeps you pushing forward. It creates a cycle of setback and small victory that feels genuinely rewarding when you finally push a little higher than before.
