Players control Lloyd von Roiental, the young vice-commander of the Palmira 5th infantry, who is tasked with recovering a powerful artifact known as the Wand of Kinan after it is stolen. The core progression is linear, guiding the player through an overworld map where they manage a party of characters. Exploration involves navigating this world map and various towns and dungeons, with enemy encounters represented by visible sprites that roam hostile areas; these can be approached or avoided by the player. Contact with an enemy initiates a turn-based battle system that incorporates tactical movement, as characters must be positioned within their specific weapon range to attack foes.

The narrative intertwines Lloyd's quest with a broader fantasy conflict involving the elven queen Brimhil and a half-elf named Francis De La Cross. Character progression occurs automatically as party members gain experience from battles. The gameplay focuses on advancing the story through scripted events, exploring new areas, and engaging in the turn-based combat to overcome obstacles and progress toward the objective of retrieving the stolen staff.
