I picked up Army Men: Turf Wars for the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a game from 3DO that landed during a time when portable consoles were full of these smaller scale action titles. It was part of that wave of games trying to translate larger concepts into a handheld format, and this one stuck with me for its particular brand of chaos.

You control a green plastic soldier, running through suburban battlefields like backyards and kitchens, fighting off the tan army. Your main goal is to complete missions across various maps, which often involve capturing bases or eliminating all enemy forces. The gameplay is built on screen by screen exploration; you clear one area of enemies before moving to the next. You use a variety of weapons, from rifles to flamethrowers, and a key mechanic is your ability to melt enemies with your lighter, turning them into puddles of plastic. The pacing is generally fast, though the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later stages when you are surrounded. It feels like a scrappy, straightforward shooter that doesn't overcomplicate its simple pleasures.
