About Army Men : Air Combat
Army Men: Air Combat came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, published by The 3DO Company. It was part of that wave of late-era GBC titles that tried to squeeze a bit more out of the hardware, a time when developers were getting more ambitious with 3D-style graphics on the small screen. You could find it in those big plastic game cases at Electronics Boutique or Toys "R" Us, a solid option if you were into military-themed games.
You pilot a toy helicopter, a tiny plastic chopper in a backyard world. Your main job is to fly through various missions, blowing up enemy tanks, soldiers, and installations made from other green and tan army men. The gameplay is mission-based; you get a briefing and then navigate through large, open areas, hunting for targets. Signature mechanics include managing your helicopter's limited fuel and ammunition, forcing you to land at friendly bases to resupply. The game also uses a top-down perspective that lets you see a good chunk of the battlefield, but enemy fire comes from all directions. The pacing is methodical, as you carefully scout the terrain and pick your fights, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you rush in. Flying through those familiar, oversized environments with a clear objective gives the whole thing a satisfying, toy-box-at-war feeling.
