Army Men 2 came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, published by The 3DO Company. It was part of a wave of portable games that tried to bring a simplified real-time strategy experience to a handheld, a pretty common ambition for the time. You don't see many games like it on the system, which always made it stand out a little in my collection.

You control Sarge, leading a squad of green plastic soldiers against the tan army. Your main goal is to complete various missions, which usually involve destroying all enemy units or securing specific structures on the map. The game plays out screen by screen; you move your men across miniature battlefields that look like someone's backyard or a kitchen table. Key mechanics include using different unit types, like infantry and grenadiers, and managing your limited ammunition. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, because a careless charge will get your entire squad wiped out quickly. It feels like playing with toy soldiers, but with the constant tension of a real-time skirmish.
