Antz on the Game Boy Color is one of those weird little licensed games that somehow works. You play as Z, the neurotic ant from the movie, running and jumping through levels that loosely follow the film’s plot—though honestly, it’s mostly just an excuse to platform through anthills and avoid spider webs.
The controls are a little stiff at first, but once you get used to the way Z moves, it’s oddly satisfying. Some levels have you dodging giant bugs (seriously, why are the ladybugs so aggressive?), while others are more about climbing vines or pushing around tiny pebbles. There’s even a weird stealth section where you sneak past soldier ants—not exactly Metal Gear, but it keeps things interesting.
Graphics are decent for a GBC game, with some nice details like the way Z’s antennae wiggle when he jumps. The music’s forgettable, but hey, at least it doesn’t get annoying. If you’re into old-school platformers or just have nostalgia for the movie, it’s a fun little time-waster.
