Animastar GB is one of those obscure little JRPGs that never made it outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s got this weirdly charming vibe. You start off with this tiny, pixelated party of animal-like creatures (think early Pokémon meets Dragon Quest), and the battles are simple but surprisingly snappy for a Game Boy Color game.

The dialogue’s all in Japanese, obviously, but if you’ve played enough RPGs, you can kinda fumble through. The sprites are cute as heck, though, and there’s something satisfying about watching your little squad of critters take down enemies with over-the-top attack animations. It’s definitely rough around the edges, but there’s a weirdly cozy nostalgia to it.
