Altered Beast: Guardian of the Realms came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, developed by 3d6 Games and published by THQ. It was part of that wave of games trying to bring arcade-style action to the handheld, a time when you saw a lot of familiar names getting portable versions. This one was a side-scrolling beat 'em up where you played as a centurion brought back to life, tasked with stopping an evil sorcerer named Neff.

You control the warrior through a series of side-view levels, moving screen by screen and fighting skeletons, harpies, and other monsters. Your main goal is to defeat the boss at the end of each stage. The signature mechanic is transforming into different beasts; you collect three glowing orbs from certain enemies to change into a werewolf, werebear, or other creature, each with its own powerful attacks. You also collect souls from defeated foes to power up your magic meter, letting you unleash screen-clearing spells. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with limited continues making you replay sections. Playing it feels like a race against your own health bar, constantly scrambling for those transformation orbs before the next wave of enemies overwhelms you.
