Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare came out for the Game Boy Color in 2001, developed by Pocket Studios and published by Infogrames. It was part of that wave of survival horror games trying to fit a big console experience onto a handheld, and on the GBC's limited hardware it had to make some interesting compromises. The small screen and limited color palette created a particular kind of claustrophobic mood that was unique to the platform.

You control either Edward Carnby or Aline Cedrac, investigating a supernatural mystery on Shadow Island. The main goal is to uncover the truth behind your partner's disappearance and the island's ancient curse. You explore the mansion and its grounds screen by screen, solving environmental puzzles and managing a limited inventory of keys and tools. Combat is simple; you aim your weapon, wait for a targeting cursor to lock on, and then fire your pistol or other found weapons at monsters. The pacing is deliberate, often slow, as you backtrack to use new items and the fixed camera angles can make navigation tricky. It feels like a condensed, thoughtful version of a larger horror adventure, where every bullet and health item matters.
