About All-star Tennis 2000
All-Star Tennis 2000 came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. It was one of the few tennis games on the handheld, arriving when sports titles were becoming more common but still fairly simple in scope. You could play singles or doubles matches across different surfaces like grass and clay, each affecting the ball's bounce and speed.
You control a tennis player from a top-down perspective, moving them around the court to hit the ball. The main goal is to win matches by outscoring the computer or a friend via the link cable. Signature mechanics include charging your shot by holding the button for more power, aiming your returns with the D-pad, and using a special "smash" shot when close to the net. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the AI can be quite challenging on higher settings, forcing you to anticipate shots rather than just react. It feels satisfying when you place a well-timed shot just out of your opponent's reach.
