All-Star Baseball 2003 on GBA is one of those solid little sports games that actually holds up. You pick your team—I always went for the Yankees back then, no shame—and jump right into quick exhibition games or a full season. The controls are simple enough: tap A to swing, hold for power, and pray you don’t pop it up to the infield.
What surprised me was how decent the pitching mechanics felt for a handheld game. You’ve got a few different pitches to work with, and mixing them up actually matters. Curveballs hang if you mess up the timing, and fastballs down the middle? Yeah, that’s getting crushed. The fielding’s a bit clunky, but you get used to it after a few innings.
It’s not the deepest baseball sim, but for a quick fix between classes or bus rides, it did the job. The player models are tiny but recognizable, and the crack of the bat still sounds satisfying. If you ever had a GBA and even a passing interest in baseball, you probably spent some time with this one.
