About Alfred's Adventure
I picked up Alfred's Adventure for the Game Boy Color back when it first came out. It was one of those platformers that quietly appeared on the system, developed by a smaller studio whose name I can't quite recall now. It fit right in with the kind of exploratory, single-screen adventures that were common on the handheld, offering a straightforward quest without a lot of the flashier effects you'd see in bigger titles.
You control Alfred, a young hero armed with a simple sword, navigating through a series of interconnected screens. Your main goal is to rescue the princess by gathering the scattered pieces of a magical amulet. The gameplay hinges on screen-by-screen exploration; each new area is a self-contained puzzle where you defeat enemies, avoid environmental hazards like spikes and pits, and find keys to unlock doors. Combat is basic but deliberate, requiring you to get close to enemies for a swing of your sword. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially in later stages where precise jumps are essential. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes tense, trek through a compact world.
