Advance Guardian Heroes came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Treasure and published by Ubisoft. It was a time when the GBA library was full of ambitious action games trying to capture a console feel on the small screen. This one was their attempt to bring the frantic, character-driven brawling of the Sega Saturn original into a portable format.

You control one of four guardians, each with their own fighting style, as you hack and slash through waves of enemies across a fantasy world. The main goal is to stop the resurrection of an ancient evil, which involves moving through interconnected areas, battling monsters, and defeating large bosses. Key mechanics include building up a super meter for special attacks and being able to switch between a foreground and background plane during combat to dodge attacks or line up your own. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be punishing, demanding quick reflexes to manage crowds and avoid cheap hits. It feels like a demanding test of your ability to read the chaos and react without hesitation.
