Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel is one of those weird 90s platformers that tried to ride Sonic’s coattails—except instead of a hedgehog, you’ve got a squirrel with a propeller hat. Yeah, really. It’s a spin-off from Aero the Acro-Bat (which was already kind of a Sonic knockoff), but honestly, Zero’s got his own weird charm.
You’re basically bouncing around levels, spinning into enemies, and collecting acorns—because of course you are. The controls are a little floaty, and some of the level designs feel like they were made to annoy you, but there’s something oddly satisfying about the propeller spin attack. Also, the music’s surprisingly decent for a game where you play as a squirrel trying to save his girlfriend from… industrial deforestation, I guess?
If you’re into obscure SNES platformers with janky physics and bizarre mascots, this one’s a trip. Just don’t expect it to dethrone Sonic.
