Ys V: Expert came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996, developed by Nihon Falcom. It was one of the later action RPGs on the console, arriving when many players were already looking ahead to the next generation of systems. The game continued the story of Adol Christin, placing him in a new desert kingdom with a distinct visual style compared to earlier entries in the series.

You control Adol directly, moving him through towns, fields, and multi-level dungeons. Your main goal is to uncover the mystery behind a cursed mask and prevent an ancient evil from returning. The combat is more deliberate than in previous Ys games; you can no longer just run into enemies to damage them. Instead, you use a sword with a dedicated attack button, and you can also aim and fire a magical bow for ranged combat. Exploration happens screen by screen, with some areas requiring you to find specific items or solve environmental puzzles to proceed. The pacing is generally steady, though some later dungeons can feel challenging due to their maze-like layouts and tougher enemy placements. Playing it feels like navigating a methodical, self-contained adventure where each new area presents a tangible problem to solve.
