Ys IV: Mask of the Sun on the SNES is one of those weird cases where it's technically the fourth game in the series, but not the version Falcom originally intended—Tonkin House handled this one while someone else made a different Ys IV for other platforms. Confusing, right?
You still get that classic Ys feel though: fast-paced combat where you ram into enemies instead of swinging swords, killer soundtrack (as always), and a surprisingly big world to explore for an SNES action RPG. Adol’s sprite looks great, and the dungeons have that satisfying mix of puzzles and mobs to plow through.
It’s not as polished as some of the other entries, and the translation’s rough if you’re playing the Japanese version, but there’s charm in its ambition. If you’re deep into Ys lore, it’s a fascinating oddity.
