Yokoyama Mitsuteru Sangokushi came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, published by Angel, a label from Bandai. It was part of that wave of strategy titles on the SNES that tried to translate complex historical conflicts into something you could manage from your living room floor. This one is based on the manga and anime by Mitsuteru Yokoyama, which itself retells the classic Chinese epic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

You control the forces of one of the competing warlords, moving armies across a map of China to conquer territory and unify the land. The game plays out in distinct phases; you manage your cities, recruit officers, and then engage in tactical battles on a grid. A key mechanic is the duel system, where your generals can challenge enemy leaders to one-on-one fights that play out in a separate screen. The pacing is deliberate, requiring you to think several moves ahead, and the difficulty can be steep as rival factions quickly pounce on any weakness. It feels like a careful, long-term chess match played out with ancient armies.
