Winter Gold is one of those weird, late-era SNES games that tried to push the system to its limits with the Super FX chip. You get a handful of winter sports—skiing, snowboarding, even ski jumping—but everything’s in this weird, janky 3D that somehow feels both impressive and awkward at the same time.
The controls take some getting used to, especially in the halfpipe event where you’ll eat snow a few times before figuring out the timing. But there’s something charming about how ambitious it is for a 16-bit winter sports game. The music’s got that classic SNES energy too—peppy synth beats that somehow make wiping out on the slopes feel less embarrassing.
It’s not the deepest sports sim, but if you’re into obscure SNES oddities, this one’s a fun little time capsule.
