Players control the leader of a group of survivors, directing them through a series of 22 missions. Objectives vary between offensive assaults on enemy factions and defensive operations to protect the group's fortress. Gameplay involves managing a squad, utilizing a selection of 17 different weapons which include flame-throwers, Molotov cocktails, and crossbows. Players can acquire new weaponry by scavenging or stealing from adversaries and must also reinforce their base defenses to withstand attacks.

Progression is mission-based, with resource management serving as a consistent element across the campaign. Resources gathered or conserved in one mission can impact capabilities in subsequent ones. The narrative is advanced through cut-scenes that feature actors from the original film, linking the strategic missions within the broader story of survival in a lawless, flooded world.
