About Waialae Country Club
Waialae Country Club came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed by T&E Soft. It was part of that early wave of SNES sports games, arriving before many of the more famous golf titles. You could play a full round of golf right on your console, which felt like a step up from what was available before.
You control a golfer from an overhead view, moving screen by screen across the fairways and greens. The main goal is to complete 18 holes with the lowest score possible. The game uses a three-click swing meter for your shots; you press the button to start the power bar, again to set the power, and a third time to determine the accuracy of the shot. You also have to manage your club selection and account for wind, which can drastically alter your ball's flight. The pace is deliberate, and the greens can be tricky to read, making putting a real challenge. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes frustrating, test of your timing and planning.
