WWF Super WrestleMania on SNES is where the 16-bit wrestling era really kicked off—at least for LJN’s weird little trilogy. It’s rough around the edges compared to later games, but there’s something charming about the way the sprites lumber around the ring, elbows flying wildly. You’ve got classic wrestlers like Bret Hart and The Undertaker, though their movesets are… let’s say "simplified."
First match in, you’ll notice the controls take some getting used to—grappling feels stiff, and reversals are basically luck-based. But once you figure out the timing, there’s a weirdly satisfying rhythm to it. The crowd noise is hilariously repetitive, and the referee just stands there like a mannequin, but that’s part of the nostalgia. It’s the kind of game you play more for the vibe than the mechanics.
Definitely a product of its time, but if you grew up with it, the jank is half the fun.
