Vortex came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Argonaut Software. It was part of that wave of games pushing the SNES hardware, trying things that felt ambitious at the time. You don't hear about it as much as some other titles from that period, but it had its own distinct approach.

You pilot a transforming robot, switching between a walking mech and a fighter spacecraft. The main goal is to navigate large, multi-level stages, fighting enemies and searching for keys to unlock new areas. Its signature mechanics are the transformation itself, which you use to solve environmental puzzles and access different paths, and a first-person cockpit view for the ship sections. The game moves at a deliberate pace, with some challenging enemy patterns and exploration that requires careful attention. Playing it feels like managing two different toolkits to overcome a series of interconnected obstacles.
