Vortex came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Argonaut Software. It was part of that era on the SNES where developers were really pushing what the hardware could do with 3D-style graphics, trying out new ideas in action games.
You control a transforming robot, switching between a nimble fighter jet and a heavily armed walker to battle through alien worlds. Your main goal is to defend the universe from an invading force, which involves navigating large, multi-level stages. The core of the game is this constant transformation; you fly through open areas as the jet, then land and walk through tighter corridors and platforms to solve puzzles and defeat ground troops.
