About Untouchables, The
I first played The Untouchables on the Super Nintendo in 1994, a time when movie licenses were common but often hit or miss. Ocean Software handled this one, adapting the Brian De Palma film about Eliot Ness and his team taking on Al Capone. It was one of many action games on the system, trying to capture the gangster era in pixel form.
You control Eliot Ness, moving screen by screen through Chicago's streets and buildings. Your main goal is to bust up Capone's operations, which involves a lot of shooting. You have a standard pistol with limited ammo, so you frequently pick up better weapons like shotguns or tommy guns from fallen enemies. The levels are linear but require you to find keys to open doors and progress. The pacing is deliberate; you clear one area of gangsters before moving to the next, and the difficulty comes from the sheer number of enemies and their accurate shots. Navigating the levels feels tense because you are often outgunned, and managing your health and ammunition becomes a constant worry. It feels like a straightforward, challenging run-and-gun experience from that era.
