Universal Soldier was meant to be a 1992 release for the Super Nintendo from Accolade, but it never actually made it to store shelves. It was developed during a time when the SNES library was rapidly expanding with action games, many based on films. This one was tied to the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie of the same name, placing it alongside other licensed titles that tried to capture the feel of a blockbuster in 16-bit form.

You control Luc Deveraux, the character from the film, through a series of side-scrolling combat stages. Your main goal is to fight through waves of enemy soldiers and mechanized units to complete each mission. The gameplay involves running, jumping, and using a standard firearm with limited ammunition; you can also pick up different weapons dropped by foes. A notable mechanic is the ability to commandeer certain enemy vehicles, like tanks, which changes the dynamics of a fight. The pacing is generally fast, though the difficulty can spike unexpectedly with tricky platforming sections and aggressive enemies. Playing it feels like a straightforward, sometimes unforgiving run-and-gun experience from that era.
