About Universal Soldier (proto)
Universal Soldier (Proto) came out in 1992 for the Super Nintendo, published by Accolade. It was one of many action games on the system trying to capture the feel of an arcade shooter, but it never really stood out from the crowd.
You control a soldier running and gunning through side scrolling levels. The main goal is to shoot enemies and survive to the end of each stage. The game uses a unique, awkward aiming system: you have to stop moving completely, hold down the B button, and then rotate a directional cursor to choose your shot angle before you can fire. This makes the action feel slow and interrupts the flow, especially when you are surrounded. The pacing suffers because you are constantly halting to line up shots, and the difficulty spikes from this clunky mechanic. Playing it feels like fighting the controls more than the enemies on screen.
