I first came across Undercover Cops on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, a 1995 release from Irem. It arrived late in the SNES lifecycle, a time when the 16-bit beat 'em up genre was already well established with plenty of competition. You control one of three brawny officers, each with slightly different attributes, and your goal is to brawl through city streets and industrial complexes to stop a criminal syndicate. The action is screen by screen; you clear one area of thugs before moving to the next. Your character can perform basic punches and grabs, but the signature mechanics are the special attacks, which drain your health, and the ability to pick up and use various weapons dropped by enemies, like pipes and knives. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is unrelenting, with enemies swarming from all sides. Playing it feels like a constant, frantic struggle for survival against overwhelming odds.
