About Ultima Vi - Itsuwari No Yogensha (japan)
I first played Ultima VI: The False Prophet on the Super Nintendo in 1993, a time when sprawling RPGs were a real commitment. This version, Itsuwari No Yogensha, was published by Pony Canyon in Japan, and it was one of the more ambitious ports from the computer originals. It felt like a substantial world to get lost in, especially on a console.
You control the Avatar and your party from an overhead view, moving screen by screen across the land of Britannia. Your main goal is to investigate a conflict with the gargoyle race and prevent a war, which involves a lot of talking to townsfolk, exploring dungeons, and solving environmental puzzles. Key mechanics include managing your party's inventory and using the virtue system, where your actions and dialogue choices affect how characters react to you. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty comes from navigating its large world and complex interactions without much hand-holding. Playing it feels like slowly unraveling a dense, personal mystery where every conversation and discovered item matters.
